AlertEagle®120 (AE120)
EAS and SAME Decoder

WE110-AE120 Rack Mount

Thunder Eagle combined the WeatherEagle®110 (WE110) receiver with the AlertEagle®120 (AE120) decoder to create a system which captures weather alerts, filtered by event and location, based on the SAME/EAS (Specific Area Message Encoded/Emergency Alert System).

The WE110 is a portable, stand-alone radio/receiver, which decodes the 1050-hz tone used by the National Weather Service (NWS) for its weather alerts. The WE110 automatically changes channels to the strongest NWR signal to capture weather alerts from anywhere in the United States and Canada. The 1050 Hz alert tone acts as a backup for the more complex EAS/SAME encoding to make sure critical weather alerts are not missed. The WE110 has a two pole helical filter to keep other radio waves out of the WE110 so it can operated in moderately high rf enviornments.

The AE120 is a decoder, engineered for durability with modern surface-mount technology. The unit has special audio filters and amplifiers to provide the most reliable SAME/EAS decoding capabilities. The AE120 is especially useful for emergency operations centers, security offices, mobile communications vehicles, command posts, and search-and-rescue units.

The firmware in the WE110 and the AE120 is flash memory, which can be upgraded in the field, using the optional programmer.

The WE110/AE120 is often used to place pre-selected weather warnings and emergency alert messages on other communication systems, including public address systems,  police, fire or public utility conventional and trunked radio systems.

How to Select Alerts for Specific Events and Locations

Using Thunder Eagle's easy to use FipsFileMaker™ software, users can create a text file of selected events and locations which the AE120 will ‘match' against the incoming SAME/EAS alert messages. This file is uploaded into the AE120 by using Thunder Eagle's FipsLoader™ software.

When an event and location match is detected, the WE110 unmutes, the AE120 closes a double pole, double throw relay and the unit is placed into alert mode for a user/software settable period of time between 1 second and 18 hours. The default alert period is 1 minute and 30 seconds. At the end of the alert period, the WE110 will mute and the relay will open.

If the NWS End of Message signal is detected, the WE110 audio will immediately mute.

If another alert is ‘matched’ while a first alert is active, the clock will reset and keep the system in alert mode for an entire new alert period.

Diagnostic Features

As a result of years of research and development, the the WE110, AE120 and AE400 have many patented diagnostic features that can provide you with positive feedback about the operation of the entire EAS/SAME system. These include the following:

1. A real-time FSK Lock-Detect LED. This patented diagnostic feature instantly informs the user when there is audio on the channel, no audio on the channel, and when the NWS is transmitting and EAS/SAME message.

2. The WE105/WE110 digitally records the most recent audio alert for later playback like an answering machine. LEDs on the WE110 and AE120 automatically inform the user of each step in the EAS/SAME alerting process including each FSK SAME/EAS burst, the event and location matched (in text format), and whether the “End of Message” signal has been decoded.

3. All of the details of the last alert are saved in non volitale (will not be erased if the power is interrupted) memory.

4. A “Last Alert” button sends the most recent alert received out to the RS-232 printer port for diagnostic purposes.

5. A “Reset” button mutes the speaker and opens the alert relay, turning off the system.

6. An Audio-In port enables the user to test the system with recorded .wav audio files of actual EAS/SAME tests.

6. The user can place the WE105/WE110 and AE120 and AE400 into diagnostic mode for full diagnostic details of each same burst, which is critical for troubleshooting.
